Hi-so cupcake celeb affects ‘downmarket’ street food in Thonglor

COCONUTS HOT SPOT — Don’t be surprised if while munching its take on authentic Thai food, you bump into a celeb or three at the newly opened Pak-Boong: Thai Street Eats.

After all, Pak-Boong was opened in Thonglor two months ago by cupcake savant Navanath “Jan” Sriyuksiri, famous for such as her “Made by Jelly Jan” cupcake shop in Siam Paragon.

The place was constructed in a loft style yet embellished with a touch of the urban under the same roof: hanging street lights, red lawn chairs, blue-trim tin plates and a street-looking beverage cooler. It’s a place where random classic fare such as “Lemon Tree,” “Get The Party Started,” and “Barbie Girl” fill the space to make it feel like a chill, retro place for street food.

Pak-Boong’s signature dishes may feed your creative hunger with some playful twists. The Por Pia Pad Thai (Crispy spring roll filled with Pad Thai, THB100, which still has all the flavor, texture and aroma of Pad Thai filled in spring roll wrappers was flavorsome without having to dip in a sweet chilli jam. The Moo Pan Gon Pia In Sea (Pan-seared minced pork and mackerel, THB210) delivered a balanced combination of well-seasoned meat and fish, which were pretty heavy on herbs. You may also find some garlic skins while chewing.

We loved the idea of having Lychee-Fried Rice (THB120) with chicken, shrimps and a fried egg, but the lychee must’ve been playing hide-and-seek, or we were just not lucky enough to find a single piece on our plate. How disappointing.

Besides Thai comfort food, they also offer some light options The  Nam Prik Ka Pi Pla Tu (Shrimp paste dip mixed with fried mackerel, THB180) or Lon Tao Jeaw (THB140) – the soybean paste dip served with local Thai herbs and veggies – could get you stuffed with fewer calories.

Mainstream dishes like Pad Thai Kung Sod (stir-fried rice noodle with chargrilled river prawns, THB120) and Som Tum Thai & Gai Yaang (Papaya salad and Thai style grilled chicken, THB260) are also served here.

Moving on to the drinks, the homemade chrysanthemum (THB50) and Kra-Jiap juice (roselle, THB50) were suggested by the waitress. The roselle aroma was very nice, yet was buried in artificial sweetness.

And if you don’t have a serious meeting to attend, do try a signature cocktail such as the “I Give You Butterfly” (THB290) a Gin-infused medley of butterfly pea, lychee and lime, “Watermelon Your World” (THB290) – Sangsom, fresh crushed watermelon and Thai basil leaves – or spice your day up with “Spice Girls” concoction of Tequila, fresh lemon grass, fresh ginger, lime and topped up with ginger ale.

If you are in the neighborhood, it’s worth dropping by for a quick lunch or exclusive peek at actors and celebs in the flesh, thanks to the lovely owner’s connections.
