Hang the DJ Episode 24 – DJ Absolud

How did you get into DJ-ing?

I started pretty young when I was around 14, buying all the singles and stuff that came out. I played at high school parties, but then two years later in ’91 went to my first warehouse party in Amsterdam and knew that was it right away. I’ve been hooked on house music ever since and started organizing parties a few years later with some friends and one thing led to another… now, 24 years later I still love playing and making people boogie. I think it’s still magic what you can achieve with music. And now that I’ve played in so many places in the world and for so many different nationalities. I really see music is the universal language we all know.

Describe the music you play in five words.

Nu disco, deep house, Nu Funk, House, Techno. Haha I just can’t …anything that has got a groove and some soul in it.

What’s the most fun you’ve ever had at a gig? Give us all the ugly details?

Oi there have been many, but one of my most favorite was in rainy season on the island of Koh Tao. The island was really quiet with not much happening, so me and my friend decided to throw a party. We printed 300 posters with an airplane sign and wrote “Koh Tao Airport Open Soon” and nothing else… The whole island panicked, even all the Thai locals were asking questions.

Then a week after everybody freaked out we made 200 flight tickets (that was the flyer /invite to the event) and transformed a big restaurant/mini-golf into an airport for a night… with passport control, baggage claim, flight announcements on the toilets, etc. So many people came and the place was packed with people dressed up as suicide bombers, lost tourists, stewardesses etc. it went off all night long… and got really messy with people swimming in the pond and so on, but all in a good way. For sure one of the best nights I’ve had in Thailand so far.

What’s your favorite venue to play in Bangkok?

In Bangkok it has to be Bed Supperclub, played there a few times and loved the vibe. On the islands, in Koh Samui it has be the Cha Cha Moon, the new beach club on Chaweng and Beach Republic in Lamai. On Koh Tao, of course I have to say my own place, MOOV because we always have a great vibe.

Which track are you most excited about right now?

There’s many, but I am loving “What I Might Do” – Ben Pearce

Trap music: yea or nay?

Trap? Haha I’ve never heard of it.There’s a new name for music every other week. I liked when it was just house!

______ always packs the dance floor.”

Good groovy basslines will do the job most of the time. But one of my favorites is “Lost in Music” – Sister Sledge

What’s one song you will never, ever play?

Anything EDM, Black Eyed Peas, Gaga, Bieber, Guetta, cheese factory stuff.

What’s the best way for someone to get you to play their request?

Know your stuff and know what you’re asking, if it fits in with what I’m doing and I’ve got it… no problem.

What shows/residencies do you have lined up?

You can find me playing every Friday at Woo Bar at the W Retreat Samui, Sundays at Beach Republic in Samui and Wednesdays at Cha Cha Moon Beach Club in Samui. I also play monthly at the Castle on Koh Tao and at my own place called MOOV on Koh Tao, of course.
