Fresh ‘n fly fare at FEAT.’s new location

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – Landlord problems forced Bangkok’s first chicken ‘n waffles joint, FEAT. (yes, the period is necessary), to relocate, an exigency that has caused a rethinking of both the menu and aesthetic of the former Siam Square eatery.

FEAT.’s focus is still American comfort food, with dishes like BBQ spare ribs (THB250), chicken ‘n waffles (THB180) and an American cheeseburger (THB160) gracing the menu. In addition, the restaurant provides plenty of oddball munchies to get excited about. The bacon and chili is unique; it features crispy strips of bacon fried with bits of garlic and sprinkled with dried chili powder. The chili mac, a big bowl of cheesy macaroni with a dowsing of sloppy joe sauce, is an appropriately messy affair.

FEAT.’s über-casual vibe adds immensely to the joint’s appeal. The wait staff is clad in baggy street wear and silver chains, and it’s not uncommon to hear a string of expletives emerging from the venue’s ghetto-fab mood music. You don’t have to take yourself or your dining buddies too seriously here, and that’s a big plus.

It’s the steezy nature of the gang behind the eatery that gives it this chilled out vibe. One is a resident DJ at Demo, another runs a shop importing trendy street brands like Supreme and KENZO and another is a well-known graphic designer. Inside FEAT. you’ll find a life-sized stormtrooper guarding the simple, clean dining area, which is comprised of finished wooden floors and furniture. The space is small to begin with, and they’ve done a decent job of maintaining its open feeling. Portraits of iconic figures painted by one of the partners look down on the dining area, and a small bar is tucked away in a back corner.

FEAT. claims to specialize in a drink native to New England country clubs – the Tom Collins. They don’t go easy on the gin, but the puckering sourness of the “lemonade” helps hide the booze. You could say it’s a “feat” of mixology well worth sampling.
