Fresh egg yolk and ice cream make weirdly wonderful dessert

COCONUTS HOT SPOTS — Contrary to what you might believe, egg is no stranger to many frozen desserts. But seriously, who would want to see egg in their ice cream anyway?

Well, apparently, a lot of people.

In On Nut, there is a local ice cream shop —Tim Kai Kaeng — that serves up eggy ice cream. Does the idea of yellow swirls of egg yolk marbling a scoop of coconut ice cream sound good? I know it’s a bit hard to imagine how this could be in any way appetizing, but when you taste it you will know why this is a pretty genius food idea.

At Tim Kai Kaeng (literally “Frozen Egg Ice Cream” in Thai), an egg yolk is mixed into the coconut ice cream just moments before it is scooped up into small bowls to be served. Those few seconds, not even a minute, are enough for the frozen ice cream to freeze the yolk from a yellow liquid into solid swirls. The result is beautiful and you won’t be able to stop yourself from trying it, even though a voice in the back of your head says, “that’s totally a raw egg.”

The frozen egg, when mixed with coconut ice cream, makes the texture denser and adds chewy bits of chunk. Before you ask, no, it doesn’t add a funny taste or smell to the  ice cream.

At this shop, you can order a simple bowl of coconut ice cream and egg, the basic Tim Kai Kaeng, or you can choose a number of Thai-style toppings to go with your scoops, starting at THB25 (depending on how wild you go with those toppings).

These colorful ingredients are the same that can be found at most shaved ice stands. You can get sweetened palm seed, job’s tears, coconut chunks, candied pumpkin, sweetened longan, corn, sweet sticky rice, herbal jelly, Thai melon, toasted peanut, lod chong, and salim. All of these can be mixed to your liking. There is no rule on how to mix these toppings properly so feel free to try a crazy combo.

You will be spoiled for choice here. The colors, tastes, textures and possibilities will overwhelm you. I couldn’t just sit at my table and order from a menu card; I had to walk all the way to the front and look at all the toppings. Then, I pointed at what I wanted instead of writing it down. It made me feel like a child again and gave me a pretty good idea of what I wanted on my second bowl too.
