Maybe it’s the highly anticipated release of “The Great Gatsby” – all we know is that the Roaring 20s trend is in, and Bangkok’s hippest gangsters and molls were out in full force at the 2magazine 6th year anniversary party on Thursday night.
The 1920s theme was carried out incredibly well, with the Grand Hyatt Erawan’s ballroom transformed with an Art Deco motif and complemented by the enthusiastic crowd’s willingness to actually come dressed in costume. Partygoers were decked out in suspenders, round frame glasses, slicked back hair, cloche hats, and stylish bob cuts. If a hotel guest accidentally wandered down to the ballroom they would have certainly thought they stepped back into to time – gents were walking around with rocks glasses filled two-fingers full of cognac and gals were sporting flutes of champagne. That’s not a normal party in Thailand, but that’s truly what the era was all about: Getting drunk in style. Remember, in the 20s you had to go to underground and illegal nightclubs just to drink alcohol in America. You had to be cool to party.
The Helmetheads provided some jivin’ jams and there was even a blow-up Titanic slide that replicated the sinking ship. (The Titanic sunk in 1912 so a decade before the Roaring 20s, but hey, it was a nice touch.) The highlight of the party was surely the quality and variety of alcoholic beverage sponsors, however. Big names like Hennessy and Belvedere took care of the hard stuff, and Heineken and Chandon rounded out the selection with the beer and sparkling wine. 2magazine really put on a ducky party with this one, attaboy!
