Pizza Aroy takes an Italian staple on the road

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – The beauty and deliciousness of pizza lies in its simplicity. In Italy, the birthplace of pizza, the dish is still typically made in wood-fired ovens and served to diners as plate-sized snacks in open-air pizzerias. Pizza Aroy (which Coconuts covered at its inception) offers a fair approximation of the Italian formula by making wood-fired pizza with simple, imported Italian ingredients in an open-air setting. The only difference is that in this case, the beautiful Italian countryside is replaced by Bangkok’s chaotic, urban surroundings.

What’s more, Pizza Aroy is entirely mobile.

The pizzeria has taken a standard TATA Motors utility truck and welded an imported wood-burning pizza oven to its bed. The oven system comes complete with a custom, spot-welded oven exhaust system that towers above the truck and is held aloft by scaffolding. The entire system can be packed up and carted around in order to produce fantastic pizza anywhere in Thailand.

You can find Pizza Aroy most everyday at its home base on Lad Phrao’s Town-in-Town Soi four, in what the owner dubs “Bangkok’s little Italy.” Giant awnings adorned with an Italian flag motif will let you know you’re in the right place.

Aroy’s pizza menu is simple. Its two-tiered system offers eaters two choices: 12-inch pies at THB249 or THB349. Simple pies like pepperoni-and-olives or margherita pizza ring in at THB249 apiece, while THB349 will fill you with interesting pies like the Pizza Mai Sabai, topped with minced spiced chicken and holy basil. This pie’s name serves as a cheeky reference to the problems that foreigners often run into with spicy Thai food.

If an entire pie is a little too much, then give one of their “pizza sandwiches” a try.  These grab-and-go goodies are essentially two slices folded on top of each other. They’re also quite a bargain at THB60 each.
