DINING DISPATCH – A new dimension will soon be added to the already popular Opposite venue, across from WTF on Sukhmvit Soi 51. The owners felt like it was time to maximize the full potential of the space rather than limit its use to poetry nights and pop-up dinners so they’ve expanded it to include a full-scale bar and a fully operational kitchen, hence the addition of “mess hall” to the name.
Well-known chef, Jess Barnes, who formerly ran the kitchen at Quince, will be heading up the new kitchen at Opposite Mess Hall. Chef Jess is no stranger to the venue; in 2012 he hosted a highly acclaimed pop-up dinner at Opposite known as “Lard-o-licous.” In a rather serendipitous occasion, Chef Jess’s departure from the ever-popular Quince was timed perfectly, as Opposite Mess Hall was looking for someone to bring an innovative-yet-casual approach to menu, which was just starting to take form.
Rugged wooden décor from the original opposite will remain, but some industrial design touches will be added in addition to some utilitarian aesthetic elements from a battleship, paying homage to the “mess hall” name.
Craft beer from Beervana will be on tap as well as a variety of cocktails using homemade bitters and infused vermouths that promise to bring something special to the cocktail list.
Opposite Mess Hall opens in mid-May but there will be various events and tastings held to whet the palette of Bangkok’s discerning eaters until then.
