COCONUTS HOT SPOT – Food Republic on the 6th floor of the new Central Rama 9 is the antithesis of every other food court in Bangkok… and it’s awesome. The atmosphere is, dare we say, luxurious – marble tables and blonde wood benches; Chinese decorative accents (and soothing Chinese tunes); and well-removed views looking down on the chaos that is Ratchada Road below. Best of all, there’s no jockeying for position to grab silverware and no lines to order one’s precious food. That’s right, it’s not that busy… at least for now.
About that food, there is pretty much every Thai variation that you could imagine (slanted toward Thai-Chinese) and everything that we’ve tried so far has been aloi to the maximum. Notable stations include include khao geng, khao man gai, khao ka moo, duck noodles, and a special pad thai stand. You can also sit down and order yakitori in the back. The quality of the food generally seems better than your average food court and they don’t skimp on the portions – no three mealy shrimps as your only protein source for lunch here.
So it must be expensive, right? It’s not. It’s a bit more pricey than the down and dirty Fortune Town food court across the road (where you must physically beat back competitors for a place to sit) but it’s about the same as the courts at Siam Paragon or Emporium. And it’s so much more lovely and nice.
Turns out Food Republic is a chain from Singapore. They’re doing something right.
