Cacao! Churros ‘n’ chocolate at Chu

COCONUTS HOT SPOT – For as much as everyone loves chocolate, there aren’t enough decent spots to get the good stuff in Bangkok  – which is a shame because chocolate is one of the most important foods known to mankind. Teenage girls use it like an anti-depressant, forgetful husbands smooth over conflicts with its soothing powers, and it has an extraordinary amount of antioxidants to boot.

So where can you go to enjoy chocolate in all its glory? Hint: its NOT Chocolate Ville, which actually has little to do with chocolate. The answer comes in the form of Chu Chocolate Bar & Café, a chic chill-out spot located at Exchange Tower in Asoke.

Chu is the antithesis of Starbucks, although you might not guess it from the throngs of trendy customers hanging out there. These are the type of people that probably would get off on the fact that almost every ingredient used is imported from Europe – but they probably don’t even know it because Chu uses a very low key approach and lets the deserts do the talking.

If it’s been a rough day at work, give the Jack Daniel’s Milkshake a try, a standard vanilla milkshake with a good ol’ dose of Tennessee whiskey. If your girlfriend is experiencing her monthly routine of crankiness, try bringing her in for an orange brownie. The hot chocolate (58% dark) are great for a mini-trip to the Alps.

Here’s another reason why dozens of people skip the Starbucks and go here: There’s no microwave. That means that breakfast sandwiches are actually made to order , with bacon, egg, and cheese on tasty ciabatta bread.

The star of the all-day brunch menu certainly has to be the eggs benedict, a rarity on Bangkok menus, and you even get the choice of smoked salmon or Canadian bacon. Another menu item which doesn’t appear much around our city is churros, the Mexican fried treats with cinnamon and sugar. That’s actually where this café got its name from: CHU-rros.

Sure the Exchange Tower location is a little big business-esque, and the prices are somewhat on the higher side, but for those who have a sweet tooth it’s a must.
