BASH: Bangkok’s new latenight jam

“Wow. This  place looks so tacky.”

“The music is whack.”

“Hey, let’s go to Bed!”

“Wait guys, there’s supposed to be a really cool performance later…”

At 1:30am there was still no show, but it was too late to go to the neighboring clubs so we stuck around and waited for something to happen – and it did.

First, there was a noticeable change in the music that got us dancing like we were at a rave. Even the ones who dismissed the club at first glance and contemplated an escape to Bed were dancing and putting their their hands up in the air. The cheesy Flintstones-inspired decor quickly faded into oblivion as DJ Lee Cabrera (Steven Lee) started spinning some filthy electro beats.

Upstairs on the third level DJ Dean Michaels from Miami was spinning a mash-up of hip-hop classics. It made for a nice change of scene after being in the smoke-filled house levels. That’s another thing about BASH you should know: Smoking is allowed inside which means you have human fog machines adding to the clubbing experience.

Back on the house level, these crazy alien-like creatures with boobs that put Madonna’s cones to shame came out of nowhere and danced robotically while pointing their red laser beams at us. Production manager and costume creator Forrest Mallard told us about his designs: “The concept on a very basic level was ‘sexy cyborg’ and it was from that basic theme that I tried to take in a bizarre and extreme direction – triple-breasted ladyboy cyborg, missile and battleship breast cyborg, drill-bit tit cyborg.”

So what kind of crowd can you expect at BASH? Obviously those who have the stamina for partying till the late AM. It’s hard to tell at the moment who the regulars will be, but we found an extremely diverse group on the grand opening night. Everyone from Bangkok celebs like Natalie Glebova and Odette Henriette Jacqmin to big shots of the local clubbing industry were there to show their support. On the other end of the spectrum were  scruffy-looking folks who made the place look like an exact replica of Mixx club. Of course there were plenty of babes and thanks to the success of neighboring Levels Club’s Friday nights, a bunch of fresh meat poured into BASH at the wee hour of 3am.

As the night drew on, it became more and more impossible to leave. The music kept us dancing harder, faster, stronger, and the crowd got increasingly better looking. Alcoholic drinks were pretty reasonably priced at THB220 (opening night special we presume), but non-alcoholics were punished with coke and water both priced at THB200…. and it wasn’t even Evian!
