5isters Cafe: Bringing a dose of Artitude to Thonglor

With a plethora of bars ranging from the whimsical Iron Fairies to the over-priced and obnoxious Wine Republic, the yuppies and nouveau riche of Thonglor were in need of a place with some heart and soul.

Hence, 5isters Artitude Café was created. This literal glass box nestled between sois 17 and 19 is the epitome of cozy and eclectic, with whitewashed walls and pseudo-outdoor seating in the mini-courtyard of a little alley of shops.

The five Dejtanasoontorn sisters (Jane, Ann, Eei, Mai and Pete) had always wanted to do something together. “Our original idea was not to just be a café, but also to sell products with an emphasis on design, such as custom pencils and notebooks, hence the name ‘artitutde,’ ” said Jane, a graphic designer by day and bartender by night. “Mai lives in the neighborhood and saw the space in mid-December. We had to make a prompt decision in only 2 weeks because someone else wanted the space.”

5sisters opened its doors on January 15th and the girls have been busy serving up tasty drinking dishes from smoked German sausage, to BBQ ribs, to flavorful Japanese udon. The café also sells fun and quirky gadgets and accessories like the exclusive “I Love My King” SIGG bottle (THB1400) and a slim and toy-like Singaporean cell phone (THB 3000).

Call it an adult lemonade stand, as the sisters spend night after night mixing and shaking and creating signature cocktails. The decadent and delicious Dark Water (THB95) is vodka mixed with Toblerone that has been chilled and whipped up into a mousse overnight and comes in the form of a shot. The Hawaii Five S (THB140) is their most popular drink on the menu and is comprised of vodka, Malibu rum, and 3 different juices (cranberry, pineapple, and grapefruit). If your buddy is in AA, have him try the Sunshine (THB50), a sweet iced green tea with fragrant lavender and vanilla, or the refreshing Adam and Eve (THB50), an apple and peach blend.

The quaint indoor space (it only seats 30) is full of plush bolsters and retro furniture that creates the feeling that you are in your friend’s living room. There is no need to scream over loud electro-pop or vibrating bass, as the music varies from Just Jack to Vampire Weekend and even some rather fun Bossa Nova Ramones covers.  “Soon we’re going to ask pop artist Chalit to sell his work and turn the space into a revolving art gallery. We are also hoping to host some acoustic shows as well,” said Jane. Whether you want to grab an after work cocktail or have a chilled out time chatting to friends, 5isters offers a nice new alternative to the Thonglor status quo.

5isters Artitude Cafe is pen from Monday-Saturday from 6:30pm to midnight with happy hour from 6:30pm to 8pm.
