Good beer is expensive and in Bangkok it will soon be even more so. The good folks leading the country recently let it be known that they would be instituting a new tax on alcoholic beverages. No one is quite sure exactly how the tax structure is going to change things or how it will affect beer prices, but one thing is for sure—prices will go up. With that in mind all Bangkok beer drinkers have an excuse to imbibe before the current price window closes.
I suggest that you take advantage of some of the newer beers available that are on the more expensive side to begin with. These specific beers have either just arrived, or they’re going to be released within the next few weeks, so when you see them on a menu, make sure to order them because their prices will probably jump considerably.
Here are Coconuts’ picks for the best new brews:
My Antonia by Birra del Borgo

This is a pilsner for people who like beers with a little more complexity. It’s got the extreme drinkability of a pilsner, but it also exudes a nice aroma of hops and flowers like an IPA. It’s perfect for drinking in this hot and humid climate. America’s Dogfish Head was brought in to co-produce this brew by Birra del Borgo and as any beer geek will tell you, a collaboration like that has got to be good!

Dana by BrewDog
[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”21025″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”400″,”style”:”display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;”,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”600″}}]]
Dana comes from BrewDog’s “IPA is Dead” series that has only been brewed once, so don’t wait to try this one—it won’t be around for long. It uses a single type of hop, which BrewDog refers to as, “a pseudo noble hop. Noble like a mother fucking king.”, Since this is a Dana hop strain it means that the IPA has a nice piney, orange-y, soapy-in-a-good-way taste.

Aurora Australis by Nøgne Ø
[[{“type”:”media”,”view_mode”:”media_original”,”fid”:”21026″,”attributes”:{“alt”:””,”class”:”media-image”,”height”:”400″,”style”:”display: block; margin-left: auto; margin-right: auto;”,”typeof”:”foaf:Image”,”width”:”600″}}]]
This beer has probably been to more continents than you have. It starts off at Australia’s Bridge Road Brewery before being stuck in barrels previously used to age red wine, then it’s aged as it ships up to Nøgne Ø in Norway where it’s bottled. And now it’s here in Bangkok. The red wine notes come through strong, making it a beer to have to celebrate something special. It’s a heavy hitter.

Lion Stout

There’s an entire meal in this bottle. It’s thick, heavy and warm feeling—making it perfect to drink outside when the cool weather rolls in after a rainstorm at night. Stouts are hard to consume in such a hot climate, but Lion tastes just like coffee, so start your weekend mornings off with one of these in your air-conditioned lair.
