COCONUTS HOT SPOT – Kab Kao Kab Pla is the kind of eatery that seems to tick all of the boxes required for a lame restaurant. It’s in a mall, there are multiple branches, the staff wear cheesy uniforms and it’s backed by a massive corporation (iBerry, the popular ice cream and dessert chain). Yet, beneath the surface at Kab Kao Kab Pla, there’s an interesting menu full of dishes you won’t find anywhere else.
Take the shrimp and ham mac & cheese with truffle oil(THB220). That sort of creativity is rare in neighboring restaurants occupying Ari’s La Ville. Another unique option is the ham cheese cigar roll(THB130). This spring roll-like rendition of the classic ham and cheese sandwich is re-imagined as a tight little package of cheese rolled up in ham and then deep fried. For those predisposed to pork it doesn’t get much better than that.
The menu might read like one of those “I’m trying to placate all palettes” deals, but that’s all right when you do everything particularly well. One dish that particularly stands out is the pig knuckle stew(THB230), which incorporates a caramel element into the broth, creating a candied mess of sweet liquid and melt-in-your-mouth stewed pork. For another extreme flavor, get into the yellow bamboo shoot pickle curry with salmon, a saucy concoction of puckering bamboo shoots with chunks of salmon.
Since iBerry, the parent company of Kab Kao Kab Pla specializes in desserts, there’s a vast selection of after dinner treats that rival the savory menu. The legendary ice cream is a safe go-to, but if you’re feeling adventurous there’s an entire selection of decadent cakes paired with the aforementioned ice cream also available.
