Bangkok’s Gaggan takes top spot in Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants list

Bangkok’s cool molecular gastronomic Indian restaurant Gaggan has been crowned the best restaurant in Asia.

The restaurant on Langsuan Road, helmed by chef Gaggan Anand, took the top prize for the second year running and was praised by judges for its “fun tasting menu which balances the soulfulness of Indian street food with hyper-modern cooking techniques to unrivaled effect.”

“Gaggan is boundary-pushing but never too serious: a restaurant where fun dining is taken to a new level, but not at the expense of taste or technique,” the awards group, sponsored by San Pellegrino and Acqua Panna, said.

Three other Bangkok restaurants also made the list, including Australian chef David Thompson’s high-end Thai restaurant Nahm, which fell one place down the rankings to Number 8; Thai chef Ian Kittichai’s modern Thai restaurant Issaya Siamese Club, which rose 20 spots to Number 19; and US chef Tim Butler’s modern international restaurant Eat Me, which rose two places to Number 23.
