Bangkok’s Bona Fide American Bagel Joint

COCONUTS HOTSPOT – Ask any American what they miss most about home and somewhere in the list of friends, family, etc., you’ll hear the word “bagel.” Two years ago the Bangkok bagel scene exploded with numerous bagel joints, most notably Bangkok Bagel Bakery in Chidlom, which is phenomenal. The most recent (but not that recent) addition the bagel scene comes in the form of The Bagel Café on the corner of Ekkamai Soi 4.

This bagel “café” won’t impress anyone with its bland aesthetics. What’s exciting about this joint is that it’s probably the closest you’ll get to your neighborhood bagel shop.

It’s the regional specialties that set The Bagel Café apart from the city’s other bagel shops. The Carolina-style pulled pork, for example, is a rarity outside its places of origin. While most BBQ sauces are tomato based, Carolina style sauces use a mixture of vinegar and mustard, giving the pulled pork sandwich a tangy-yet-spicy taste that is entirely different from any of the other pulled pork sandwiches you’ll find in Bangkok.

Another star is the New York cheesecake, which actually resembles real New York cheesecake. For those from the Sunshine state there’s the key lime pie, named after the famous limes found in the Florida Keys.

And of course, there are bagels. Most folks will tell you that its nearly impossible to replicate a good New York style bagel, and they’re entirely correct. That said, The Bagel Café gets pretty close. They’re hand rolled and have the proper glossy coating you find on the iconic boiled bagels. There’s even a variety of Schmears to go with ‘em.
