Bangkok, Hong Kong and Bali make CNN’s list of best cities for street food

Yesterday, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Bali won places on CNN’s list of the 23 Best Cities for Street Food in the world.

As we’ve been reporting in our Soi Food series, perfect street food can be found in every corner of Bangkok. From classic spots like Chinatown’s Yaowarat to little-known veritable street buffets in Soi Udomsok and Wang Lang Market.

No trip to Bangkok is complete without a streetside pad Thai, basil chicken or dish of spicy somtam salad.

CNN mentions that it’s possible to get everything from an early morning brekkies to late night munchies in Southeast Asia’s City of Angels. Start your day with tea and fried dough and end your night with delicious, spicy noodles or opt for cheap, healthy options like grilled chicken and ‘pak boong’ (stir-fried morning glory).

Street food is served from carts, stalls, stands and simple tables set up on the street. For less than USD1 (THB35) two people can usually eat dinner in Bangkok.

In Hong Kong, CNN suggests the readers try cheong fun rice rolls in Sham Shui Po and braised turkey kidneys and pig intestines in Mong Kok. We’ll be sure to add the former to our ‘to-eat’ list. The latter? Not so much.

They also mention Shau Kei Wan Main Street East and Kowloon City as hot locations to score sweet eats like tofu custard and Cantonese egg waffles.

Over in Bali, CNN highly recommends that visitors and locals ‘pig’ out on Balinese suckling pig and try street stalls Ibu Oka in Ubud and Warung Babi Guling in Sanur.

Also on the list are Tokyo, Japan; Honolulu, Hawaii; Durban, South Africa; New Orleans, Louisiana; Istanbul, Turkey; Paris, France; Cairo, Egypt; Marrakech, Morocco; Mexico City, Mexico; Cartagena, Columbia; Portland, Oregon; Dakar, Senegal; Port Louis, Mauritius; Mumbai, India; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam; Miami, Florida; Rome, Italy; Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia and Beijing, China.
