Weekend Warrior: What to do this weekend in Bangkok – February 8, 2013

Welcome to Weekend Warrior, where we offer you a few ideas to kick-start your weekend of mayhem. Warriors, go forth.

Friday

Continent Hotel Launch Party

It’s a hotel party! For its inaugural outing, the Continent Hotel is throwing open its doors and letting attendees wander throughout four of its floors, where they will have the opportunity to rub elbows with models, fashion designers and DJs.

9pm. Free. Continent Hotel, Thanon Sukhumvit, Khlong Tan Nuea, Vadhana, Bangkok 10110, Thailand.  BTS Asok station.

Saturday

Duck and Noodle Pool Party at the Ramada Encore

It’s a pool party! This fete from Duck and Noodle takes place at the Ramada Encore Hotel’s rooftop pool. For only THB300, you can get your hot body into the pool and receive a free drink to boot. Since the party starts at 3pm and runs clear into the dark of night, I’m predicting at least one near-drowning, which should serve only to liven-up the proceedings.

3pm – ???. THB300, includes on free drink. Ramada Encore Hotel, Soi Saen Samran, Khlong Toei, Bangkok 10110, Thailand.  BTS Asok station.

NZI Black and White Ball at Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel

It’s a (really expensive) Kiwi party! An event co-hosted by the New Zealand Society and the New Zealand-Thai Chamber of Commerce, the Black and White Ball offers a chance for Kiwis and Kiwi lovers to spend lavishly (THB3,700) in order to celebrate…well, it’s sort of unclear what it’s celebrating, but there’s never a bad excuse to send some love toward the nation of New Zealand. Dress code for the ball is black-tie and this year’s theme is “Slice of Heaven.”

NZI Black and White Ball. 6:30pm. THB3,700. Imperial Queen’s Park Hotel Soi Sai Nam Thip, Khlong Tan, Khlong Toei, Bangkok 10110, Thailand. BTS Phrom Phong station.

Sunday

Fin Free at Banyan Tree Hotel & Lumpini Park

Fin Free Thailand is sponsoring two events this weekend aimed at decreasing the production/consumption of shark fin soup. At 1pm, Fin Free will host a press conference in the Banyan Tree Hotel wherein representatives will lay out the claim that shark fin soup is as harmful to humans who consume the dish as it is to the sharks who provide its key ingredient. Following the press conference, representatives from the campaign will lead an anti-shark fin rally at Lumpini Park.

Press conference at 1pm, rally at 3pm. Free. Banyan Tree Hotel and Lumpini Park, Thanon Sathon Tai, Silom, Bang Rak, Bangkok 10500, Thailand.

Chinese New Year Celebrations in Yaowarat

Join the crowds in Bangkok’s Chinatown to ring in the Chinese New Year. There’s a lot to do, see, hear and eat on this first day of the Year of the Water Snake, so check out Coconuts’ guide to the festivities in order to orient yourself.

All day. Free. Yaowarat, Bangkok Thailand.
