COCONUTS HOT SPOT – Positioned at the dead of Thong Lor soi 15, Gossip is serving up some innovative dishes with an exotic soundtrack. This trendy joint owes its lineage to the same team behind Suk 11’s Oskar, a restaurant from which Gossip borrows its electro-lounge-meets-haute cuisine formula. Bare cement walls, dark woods and dim lighting give the interior a feel very similar to other “bistro” hot spots around the neighborhood. However, what sets Gossip apart is a menu that draws inspiration from regions as diverse as Tuscany and Northern Africa’s Maghreb.
Appetizers, reasonably priced between THB95 and 130, include a range of simple hors d’oeuvres like marinated olives and a smoky, creamy cod and anchovy rillettes. Bruschetta is done particularly well, using dollops of ricotta to add some contrast to the tart mixture of tomatoes. Mediterranean flavors dominate the menu, with salads boastings flavors like orange-glazed artichokes, pecorino cheese and black olives.
Slow cooked chicken, served in a tajine, pays homage to the Berber empire of Northern Africa. The stringy chicken is served in a curry-like mixture of olives and lemon rinds. The Sicilian seafood couscous delivers a medley of mussels, squid and prawns. Unfortunately, the Harissa broth settles at the bottom of the dish, leaving a large portion of the couscous a bit dry tasting. Rounding out the Mediterranean tour is a seared tuna with parma ham and anchovies done in a red wine sauce.
Although the prohibition-era cocktail trend has grown a bit tiring, Gossip does manage to mix up a selection of “forgotten” cocktails like the Sazerac and “The Avenue,” the latter of which consists of bourbon mixed with calvados, passion fruit and orange water. Cocktail “Creations” ring at THB240, while standard cocktails like a gin and tonic are priced at THB180.
If you’re in the right mood, the ethno-electro soundtrack blasting from the sound system can be amusing, but most of the time it is simply too loud to have a conversation and damages an otherwise lovely experience. You’ll find yourself struggling even to hear what the wait staff is saying, but the best remedy for this is electing to sit on the outdoor terrace.
