COCONUTS HOT SPOT – The culinary capital of South America has just collided with the culinary capital of Southeast Asia, and the result is Familia Chicken & Grill on Rama 9. This days-old joint serves up dishes from Peru, and specializes in juicy rotisserie chicken.
Familia is built around a special rotisserie oven brought in from Peru. This massive instrument is able to roast nearly 20 whole chickens at a time. It only makes sense that a Peruvian chef should operate a specialized Peruvian oven, so Familia recruited a pedigreed culinary master from Peru who even has experience putting on dinners for the Peruvian embassy.
Familia’s menu is simple: The mains all involve (duh) rotisserie chicken. You can order a quarter, half or even a whole chicken accompanied by fries and a salad. The condiments are key here and the restaurant offers a fantastic trio of chimichurri sauce, yellow chili mustard and spicy aioli. The chicken itself is basted with a mix of Latin spices that give it a robust flavor in its own right.
To complement the chicken there’s a slew of sides like salchipapa (a platter of fries, frank and sausages), or, if you fancy something a little more exquisite, then you can give the chicken heart ananticucho a try. Ananticucho is similar to a kebab. In this case, however, chicken hearts take the place of the kebab’s traditional cubes of meat.
The restaurant offers Singha beer at present, but in the future the owner wants to bring in the traditional spirit of Peru: Pisco. At the moment, no one imports Pisco to Thailand, but when it does become available you’ll know where to find it.
