Get away from it all with an idyllic escape to Southeast Asia’s “forgotten country” of Laos, where much awaits discovery.
Our favorite is the charming UNESCO world heritage city of Luang Prabang. Perched among gorgeous mountains at the confluence of two rivers, it’s the perfect place to relax, eat delicious food and take in spectacular scenery. While its appeal as a regional destination has seen growing numbers of visitors, it remains a serene respite from the madness of Bangkok.
Coconuts TV recently traveled to Luang Prabang and scoped our top 10 picks for what to do there.
1. Buddhist alms-giving at daybreak is worth waking up early to witness as locals and tourists line up to give food to the city’s saffron-robed monks. Just be respectful and don’t shove that camera in the monks’ faces – it’s been an issue.
3. Luang Prabang is known for its numerous glittering temples, which are protected by the city’s UNESCO status and house more than 1,000 monks. Be sure to visit Wat Xieng Thong and Wat Mai.
4. Every night, a huge night market pops up in the center of town filled with vendors of handmade Lao goods. You won’t be able to resist picking up some souvenirs.
5. Climb the steps of Mount Phousi and take in a magical 360-degree view of the city, its temples and surrounding landscape from the summit. It’s an ideal place to watch the sun rise or set over the mighty Mekong River.
6. Journey to the Pak Ou Caves, cut into a limestone cliff and crammed with Buddha images. You can take a scenic boat ride to the caves along the Mekong or hire a car. We don’t recommend motorbiking there.
7. Set sail along the Mekong River in the late afternoon and enjoy the stunning sunset over the water.
8. Take a cooking class and learn how to make tasty Lao cuisine. We recommend Tamarind Restaurant’s cooking school.
9. Step across the rickety (but safe) bamboo bridge over the Nam Khan River. It’s a great spot to watch the sunset and take in the dreamy mountain views.
10. Explore the quaint town of Luang Prabang on foot or bike. Be sure to stop for a drink along the river and to sample the amazing local cuisine.
