Souls of Bangkok: The Fishy Karma Vendor

SOULS OF BANGKOK — For all the means available for losing merit, fortunately a bundle of options exist for winning it back.

One of those is the Thai tradition of freeing animals, like the fish this woman sells at a market in the Charoenrach Market of Thonburi district.

Not just any fish will do. If you’re sick, you should free a “doctor fish.” Eels are the best candidates if you want things in life to run a little “smoother,” and love-seekers should release the kittens of the sea only in pairs.

Souls of Bangkok is a Coconuts series of street portrait photography inspired by Brandon Stanton’s Humans of New York. Every human has a story to tell, and we intend to share some from the millions of souls who call Bangkok home.
