Photo Essay: Picking up the pieces after Khlong Toey slum fire

A fire broke out Saturday at the Khlong Toey Rom Kloa slum located near the Port Authority of Thailand. The blaze was allegedly ignited by a husband who had been fighting with his wife.

After firemen put out the fire, small groups of home owners began looking for different valuables. Some dug through the ashes looking for land deeds, banking statements and precious jewelry. Many of them could only salvage the clothes they had been wearing that day.

Most of the residents Coconuts spoke with did not have insurance, but one woman said she pays THB1.2k annually and would be compensated for up to THB200k. The Klongtoey Fire chief, Tossapol also added that the fire department would help qualified families with up to THB30k in compensation.
