Photo Essay: Enjoy purrfect cute but handle with care at Bangkok’s kitty cafes

Winter is here, and it’s time to cuddle up and share some warmth with a fluffy animal companion.

In a city known to fall for fads and trends, kitty cafes have opened throughout Bangkok recently, paralleling a rising culture of pet ownership.

The Makura Cat Cafe on Srinakarin Road is the latest of six such cafes to open.Decorated in a Japanese style, it’s a cozy place with about 10 cats lounging, licking themselves and snoozing around the shop. Breeds include Siamese, Exotic Shorthair, Maine Coon and American Curl.

Beside the purry furballs, the cafe serves food and drinks such as lasagna, sandwiches, Banoffee pie and iced chocolate. Prices ranging from THB40-THB85.

Remember these are living creatures that are vulnerable to illness and infection. Some cat cafes, such as the Purr Cat Cafe, have strict rules about cleanliness and handling of the kitties. If you’re going to visit one of these cafes, remember to scrub your hands clean with disinfectant, don’t pick up the animals and pet them gently.

Hours are: Monday: Noon-9pm, Wednesday: Noon-10:30pm, Thursday: Noon-9pm, Friday-Sunday:  Noon-10:30pm.

Other cat cafes include:

1. Cataholic at Sukhumvit 39

2. Purr Cat Cafe at Sukhumvit 53

3. Chico Interior Products & Cafe at Sukhumvit 53

4. Kitty Cat Cafe at Town in Town, Tree Square Avenue (near Ladprao Road)

5. Charming Cats Cafe at Ladprao 71
