Mandalay’s jade market is believed to be the largest on earth. Here, every morning, thousands of people gather to cut, polish, and trade the precious stones.
Jade is found all over the world, but the stones from Myanmar are widely considered to be the best quality. Despite decades of international sanctions, the jade trade is still a multi-billion dollar industry, mainly to Asian countries and especially to China.
Watch the Coconuts TV video on Mandalay’s jade market, where large raw stones are bought and sold and a small army of craftspeople carve them into figurines and pendants for consumers. This video is part of our Myanmar Week series.
