In most of the developed world, combat sports involving animals are regarded as cruel and inhumane. In recent years, many countries have criminalized these contests and the individuals who engage in them are publicly shamed. But in Thailand they’ve tried something different. In the 1990s, the government enacted regulations to make the fights safer for the animals but still preserve the sports.
We wanted to know if the Thai way of doing things really makes a difference or whether there’s no way around the fact that these sports are animal cruelty. In our first episode, we tackle one of the country’s most popular pastimes – cockfighting.
