French photog transforms robot radness into art

Remember crying hysterically for mom to buy that THB20 Godzilla from one of those booths selling cheap knock-offs of your favorite characters, heroes or villains? The one played with for a day because one of its teeth fell out?

Revisit those feels again in September at an exhibition by a French photographer who’s turned his fetish for cheap Japanese toys into the center of his artistic expression.

Claude Estèbe, a specialist in Japanese culture who has collected more than 1,000 of these cheap “Pachimon” toys will showcase his work glorifying these collectibles.

Reminiscing on all the Ultramans, Gundams and more from your youth at “Pachimon: A Parallel Universe” at the Alliance Française Bangkok, part of the Photo Bangkok festival.

It opens at 7pm on Sept. 12 and runs through Oct. 10.
