Makha Bucha Day, also known as the Buddhist “merit making day,” is a national holiday throughout the Kingdom. Makha Bucha Day occurs during the full moon of the third lunar month, which tends to be in late February.
In other parts of Asia, Makha Bucha Day in known as Sangha Day and usually happens about one month after Makha Bucha. The holiday pays homage to a prominent event in Buddhist history in which 1,250 monks simultaneously gathered to honor the historic Buddha.
This year Makha Bucha fell on Monday, February 25. Per tradition, Buddhists gathered at local temples and participated in candlelight processions known as Wian Tian.
