Totally Tubular: Flow House makes surfing in Bangkok a reality

All those tourists walking around Bangkok dressed in board shorts and tank tops finally have a place to go where they won’t look stupid.

On August 18th Flow House, an “urban beach club,” will open at A-Square, Sukhumvit 26’s newest development. The soft launch will be an opportunity for the city to experience the FlowRider, a giant machine that creates a constant wave that’s meant to be surfed; the first of it’s kind in Southeast Asia. There are also a few restaurants serving comfort food, a beach bar delivering a host of cocktails developed by the Hyde & Seek folks, and a sports bar that will play the big games from around the world.

Flow House promises to be family friendly by day and turn into a hoppin’ hangout at night. They also plan to bring in some DJs and throw some outrageous pool parties, so be prepared.

The whole operation is centered the FlowRider, the essential element in an emerging boardsport appropriately named “flowboarding.” The sport appeals widely to the X-Games demographic and is sort of a combination between surfing, bodyboarding, skateboarding, skimboarding, snowboarding and wakeboarding. Phew!

The Flowrider can accommodate up to four people at a time on boogie boards or boards designed specifically for the machine. Riders who have never surfed before but have been on a skateboard or snowboard will feel right at home, as the dynamics are designed to be quite similar and easy for new riders. Once this joint is fully operational – which should be around mid-September – prices will run about THB550 per hour during the week and THB650 per hour on the weekends. Entry to the premises is completely free, however.

The FlowRider wave machine is pretty radical, but it isn’t the only thing to get excited about – we have a feeling this is going to be an excellent hangout spot. The beach theme surprisingly hasn’t been overdone in Bangkok and this place is doing it right. The Hyde & Seek mixologists are creating a cocktail menu that’s going to be big on the tropical and he food is going to be reasonably priced, with THB100-400 burgers and beach food. We hope they throw some real fish tacos on the menu.

Even though it’s an open-air venue, there is a retractable roof that can be strategically positioned to cast shadows on certain areas of the beach club, kind of like a giant umbrella. FlowRider’s got a pool and showers as well. Upstairs you’ll find a Rip Curl retail shop so you can score some sweet surf gear (it’s important to always look one’s best when flowboarding) plus the aforementioned sports bar.

Surf’s up!
