Skater Central: Grind rails and graffiti at new Rajamangala skatepark

By Cole Pennington

Skateboarders, BMXers, roller bladers (they still exist?), and posers of Bangkok are rejoicing at the recent opening of a professional-grade skatepark at Rajamangala Stadium.

Before the flooding there was a small group of kicker ramps and grind rails beside the Ramkhamhaeng night market – but after the market resumed post-flood it turned into retail space, leaving the skateboard and fixie community without a local spot.

The extreme sports gods have answered their prayers, and brand new skatepark has opened up adjacent to the rock wall behind the Rajamangala National Stadium. The park is already drawing a consistent crowd, with around sixty regulars per night.

In fact, the BMX vs. Skateboard standoff isn’t a big deal, as everyone is eager to try out the numerous new quarter pipes, grind rails, table tops, and stair sets: the only thing missing is a bowl.

The venue doubles as an art gallery; the local street artists have had a go at the cement walls surrounding the skate park and have created something incredibly unique. If you’re not a skater or BMXer its worth a gander for the street art alone.

The opening of this venue could set the stage for an X Games-esque competition to be held right in our very own city, a huge step forward for the extreme sports community.
