Bangkok steps up security at BTS, MRT, airports after Brussels terror attacks

Bangkok has stepped up security at metro stations, BTS Sky Train stations, and major airports following the twin terror attacks in Brussels yesterday.

A maximum security alert was put into place at Bangkok public transport hubs, embassies and department stores after the attacks which killed 34 and left 250 wounded at Brussels airport and a metro station.

The Mass Rapid Transit Authority of Thailand (MRTA)’s security measures includes increased patrols of its facilities, explosive ordnance disposal units manned at key stations, and extra checks of passengers’ belongings and luggage, Thai PBS reported.

Sniffer dogs have also been deployed, while security staff will monitor passengers closely.

The security alerts at Suvarnabhumi, Don Mueang, Phuket and Hat Yai airports were raised to level 3 of 4, the highest safety level ever implemented at the airports, while airport officials will closely monitor surveillance cameras to check for suspicious people or activities.

This will include stricter passenger and luggage searches, and an X-ray scan in the airport terminal to monitor for any forbidden items and weapons.

Airport officials will conduct random checks on people in the airports, while soldiers and police have been deployed to safeguard the hubs.

The Belgium Embassy in Bangkok has also raised its security alert with more security guards posted and extra police checks on vehicles in the area.
