Jalan Besar stronghold Swee Choon is known to be a haven for terrific dim sum — best enjoyed after an alcohol-fuelled night out or before a round of late-night shopping at Mustafa Centre nearby.

The restaurant, however, recently became a place of frustration for local drag queen icon Becca D’Bus, whose meal was ruined when another table of diners harassed Becca’s appearance.

According to Becca, a young man — goaded by his group of friends — came up to the table, stood way too close, and rudely demanded an answer to why a man would be wearing nail polish and sporting stained lips. Becca refused to answer the confrontational youth.

“Didn’t think I owed them education,” Becca said. “Was too tired to be really angry.”

The troubles weren’t over though, as the boys apparently made their homophobia clear afterward.

“They also thought it would be cute to yell the words ‘you gay ah?!’ when I got up to pay at the cashier,” wrote Becca on Facebook, asserting that they were terribly raised.

“Surely everybody knows it is rude to interrupt a fat person when they eat,” Becca joked.

Folks were supportive of Becca in the comments section, but the best remark came from the Swee Choon team themselves, who apologized for the incident.

“Feel free to alert any of our staff should such an incident happen again, we’ll gladly show them the door.”
