Cat lovers at Temasek Polytechnic (TP) reacted in horror upon hearing that their campus’s resident felines might have to find a new home, thanks to one student who was displeased by their presence.

People’s Association constituency manager Nickolas KS Lim shared on Facebook about a friend from TP who heard that drastic action might be taken by the authorities against the cats. According to Lim’s friend, a student filed an official complaint with the school, stating that he/she is allergic to cats. The complainant was said to have urged for the cats — who’ve made the TP campus their home for years — to be culled by the Agri-Food and Veterinary Authority of Singapore (AVA).

Naturally, a petition was launched. Over 9,000 signatures have been gathered to appeal the polytechnic to leave the cats alone.

“These cats have been very friendly, accepting (pats) from students. Many of us love them very much,” wrote a Michelle Han on change.org.

“Please help take action against this. It is ridiculous how can one complaint cause us to lose our beloved cats.”

Folks familiar with the TP cats wrote messages of support, expressing how the felines have made their lives brighter on campus.

No intention at all

In an update by Lim earlier today, he confirmed that the polytechnic actually doesn’t have any intention of calling the AVA down to put down the cats. According to Lim, the contact he spoke to even implied that the school believes that the complainant’s request (to cull the cats) is “actually overboard”.

“He knows where we are coming from, and he told me once he has a solution he will update me,” Lim assured. “I believe he is looking for credible adopters.”

Another individual who called the school backs up Lim’s statement that no action is currently being taken to remove the cats.
