Are people supportive of Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte or are they increasingly distrustful of him?
A survey released today by Pulse Asia Research showed that while a majority of respondents still approved of his performance and trusted him, his numbers have gone down by double digits.
Pulse Asia’s research was conducted from Sept. 1 – 7 using face-to-face interviews with 1,800 respondents aged 18 years old and above.
Based on the survey, Duterte currently enjoys a 75 percent performance rating among the respondents surveyed. That’s 13 percent lower than the rating he received in a June survey that the same firm conducted.
The largest drop came from Luzon, where in June the president earned an 83 percent performance rating but dropped to 66 percent this month. His rating among Class D respondents decreased by 13 percent followed by those from classes A, B, C, where it lowered by 12 percent.
Meanwhile, his trust rating also plummeted. Duterte received a trust rating of 72 percent this month, a 15 percent drop from the 87 percent he received in June. The largest drop came from Luzon where his rating decreased by 20 percent and among the class D respondents where his rating dropped by 16 percent.
On the other hand, Vice President Leni Robredo’s trust and performance ratings remained largely stable when compared to previous months. 61 percent of respondents approved of her performance this month, a one percent drop from her rating in June. She also had a 56 percent trust rating this month, the same rating she received in June.
Pulse Asia said several events dominated the news before and during the time when the survey was conducted.
This includes events such as Duterte’s decision to void the amnesty given to Senator Antonio Trillanes IV which was announced on Sept. 4 and the soaring price of rice which led to the National Food Authority chair Jason Aquino’s decision to resign.
Other events include Duterte’s inappropriate remark in late August where he said the high number of rape cases in his home turf of Davao was due to the “many beautiful women” living in the city; and the president’s allegations in the last week of August that Naga City, Robredo’s hometown, is a hotbed of shabu (methamphetamine) and that the vice president’s brother-in-law is a drug lord.
Pulse Asia’s survey was released just a few days after a Social Weather System’s survey showed that an overwhelming majority support Duterte’s controversial campaign against drugs. The SWS survey was conducted in June.
Just yesterday, Duterte’s spokesperson Harry Roque used the SWS survey in a press briefing at Malacañang Palace to show that the administration enjoys the support of the public. As of writing, Roque has not commented on the results of Pulse Asia’s survey.
