In spite of all of the negative press, the Philippines continues to attract tourists thanks to the beauty of its beaches and the diversity of its marine life.

It’s not a surprise then that two of the country’s islands were voted as the world’s best by the readers of Travel & Leisure‘s (T&L) international edition. T&L announced on Tuesday that Palawan and Cebu were ranked by readers as the sixth and eighth best islands in the world. Palawan scored 90.04 while Cebu scored 89.1.

The 2018 results is a downgrade for Palawan, which in 2017 and 2013 was chosen by the readers as the best island in the world. This year the honor was given to Java, which had a total score of 95.28.

Wrote T&L: “The Edenic Philippine outpost of Palawan scored the top spot on this list in 2013 and in 2017; it also makes the grade this year, although it cedes the top spot to a surprise entry [Java].  It remains in fine company, voted in along with its sister island Cebu.”

Other Indonesian islands that figured prominently were Bali at second place with a score of 94.06; and Lombok at third place with a score of 93.88.

Last year’s T&L list also included Boracay, which will be closed until October for environmental rehabilitation.
