The story is brought to you by the letters “P” and “U.”

If you listened carefully in Hong Kong’s Fanling neighborhood last night, you could probably hear the phrase “What’s that smell?” emanating from homes after a foul stench engulfed the area.

According to Apple Daily the culprit was a sewage truck that had broken down on Sha Tau Kok Road at around 9pm.

The newspaper reported that a tow truck came to the rescue, but as it was towing the vehicle, waste began to spill out of the truck as it was pulled along.

Plenty of cars driving through the area after the spill had no choice but to plow through the grey sludge, which according to on.cc, stretched at least 500 meters.

Curious residents in Fanling and neighboring Sheung Shui, perhaps driven by a raft of Facebook comments asking things like “did a rat poop everywhere?” decided to track down the source of the smell for themselves.

The brave souls who went in search of the source found what you see below.

Residents then reported this to police, who then passed it onto the Food and Environmental Hygiene Department (FEHD).

Personnel from the FEHD sent a few clean-up trucks to the area to clean up the mess, which was cleared up around midnight, and are still investigating what caused the spill.
