It turns out 24-year-old Angeline Fernando, whose arm was sliced off at the Ayala MRT station last Tuesday, has two heroes to thank for saving her life, and her arm.

Medical intern Charlie Jandic was hailed by the public for her quick-thinking in stopping the excessive bleeding while ensuring that Fernando’s arm was retrieved.

But 30-year-old police officer Danilo Agustin was also there to help out, and a good thing, as he was a registered nurse before becoming a police officer. He had been assigned to the area as part of the security detail for the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) Summit.

He told the Manila Bulletin in an interview yesterday that he heard a commotion and saw the victim lying down where Jandic had already begun applying first aid.

“Ms. Jandic was already calming the victim,” Agustin said. He then focused on retrieving the arm from the tracks with security guards and instructed them to get a box with ice to preserve it.

He said he helped Jandic take Fernando’s vital signs while they both quickly put together a tourniquet made from a cardigan and a belt. He also joined Jandic and the emergency medical technicians as they rushed Fernando to the Makati Medical Center, where surgeons worked for six hours to re-attach the arm.

Philippine National Police (PNP) chief Ronald dela Rosa praised Agustin for his response during the incident and told the Eastern Police District Chief Supt. Romulo Sapitula to give Agustin a medal for helping save Fernando’s life.

“A police officer and nurse like PO2 Agustin should be treasured and should be a role model to everyone,” Dela Rosa said.

For their heroism, Jandic and Agustin were yesterday presented with the Kabayani Award by a group of lawmakers in the House of Representatives, according to Inquirer.net. They were given plaques along with an undisclosed amount of cash.
