Dirty ol’ underwear thief caught in action, arrested by cops in Bangsar

A suspected thief’s underwear-stealing days are over as he was arrested in Bangsar on Saturday.

According to The New Straits Times, the 40-year-old man was caught on camera stealing undergarments from a terrace house in Jalan Limau Kasturi, Bangsar at around 7am.

He was reportedly picked up by the police when he returned to the residential area later in the evening, believed to be on the hunt for more, umm, ‘goodies’.

Brickfields deputy police chief Superintendent Arifai Tarawe told the daily that a marketing manager had earlier lodged a police report, claiming that a thief had stolen 16 pieces of undergarments that belonged to him and his wife from his home.

“The man said the undergarments were washed by his wife the night before, and she had hung them to dry on the clothes line behind their house at Jalan Limau Kasturi.

“The victim told police that at about 7.10am, he was told by his father that a man, who came in a Perodua Myvi, was seen taking away the undergarments.

“This prompted the victim to check his CCTV recording, which caught the man’s action,” Supt Arifai was quoted as saying.

Supt Arifai added that the police managed to track down the suspect through his car registration number, but when the police went to his house at the Sri Pahang Flats in Bukit Bangsar, he wasn’t home.

However, at around 5pm on the same day, the police received a phone call from the victim, who reportedly apprehended the suspect when he returned to the housing area.

A team of policemen were reportedly dispatched to the victim’s house to take the suspect into custody.

“Following the arrest, police was led by the suspect to his house at the Sri Pahang Flats, where the team found a yellow plastic bag containing six pieces of undergarments of different brands and seven underpants.

“Police also found 16 other undergarments in the house,” Supt Arifai told the daily, adding that the suspect confessed to stealing the undergarments as a “hobby”.

According to Supt Arifai, the suspect is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code for theft.
