Two men posing as police officers in Kennedy Town reportedly intimidated a domestic worker into coughing up HKD500 for jaywalking.
At around 4pm yesterday, a 36-year-old helper was crossing Sands Street, near Belcher Street, when she was approached by two men.
The men were reportedly wearing brown shirts with the word “POLICE” printed on, and demanded to see the helper’s ID card. Oriental Daily reports that they threatened to take her to the police station unless she paid them a HKD500 fine on the spot.
The helper apparently paid the men, but felt suspicious afterwards and told her employer what had happened.
The employer reported the incident to the police, who are now investigating it as a case of “impersonating a police officer” and “obtaining property by deception”.
Speaking to Headline Daily, Barrister Albert Luk warned Hongkongers not to fall for similar tricks, and said real police officers would never demand immediate payment for fines.
