Lifeguards stage protest, Victoria Park pool forced to close

Better safe than sorry we’d say, but many Easter breakers had to make alternative holiday plans yesterday morning when the Victoria Park Swimming Pool was temporarily forced to close because there were not enough lifeguards around.

The lifeguards had staged a protest by collectively calling in sick, so for safety reasons the pool had to be closed. The lifeguards were protesting against shortage of staff, long hours and heavy workload – and despite their complaints the Leisure and Cultural Services Department have not entertained their requests.

A spokesperson from the Leisure and Cultural Services Department told the RTHK that there isn’t a shortage of staff problem but will resolve issues with the lifeguards to avoid future disruptions and inconvenience to the public.
