Students beg for ban on booze near unis

Young anti-alcohol crusaders calling themselves the “Youth Network of New Drinker Prevention” has urged the government to impose a ban on alcohol sales near universities.

Following the death of a Rangsit University student who was shot after leaving a bar next to his university, more than 30 students from different institutions submitted a letter to junta boss Gen. Prayuth Chan-ocha at the Government House yesterday, asking officials to ban sales within 500 meters of university campuses.

One of the representatives said the problem of entertainment venues near universities had existed for a long time, leading to fighting, sexual assault and gambling. He then asked the government to urgently make areas surrounding universities be “suitable” for learning and education.

The group also urged military officers to take part in enforcing the ban by setting up checkpoints to screen for alcohol sales, state media reported.
