It might be an annual get-together for most but a life-changing event for a migrant worker who won S$18,888 at a company dinner on Saturday.
A migrant worker from India, only known as Selvam, took home the grand prize after competing in games during his company’s dinner and dance event by heavy machinery leasing company Pollisum Engineering Pte Ltd.
“We are happy to announce that Selvem has emerged as the lucky winner of this amazing reward,” the company wrote. The prize money amounts to 1.5 years of his salary.
The “Go Big or Go Home” night takes after the South Korean Netflix drama Squid Game where people compete to the death for exorbitant amounts of money.
It is said that the company gave out S$100,000 cash in total during the event to reward its workers who worked hard during its expansion in recent years.
Employees, who were spotted wearing the red tracksuits (a nod to the iconic green ones from the series), took part in games such as the Red Light, Green Light game and lucky draws. There was even a massive inflatable ball filled with cash hung from the ceiling, which was similar to the series.

In an interview where Selvam sat next to his giant money bouquet wrapped with S$100 bills, he said that the money will go to building a house for his family back home in India.
“I don’t own any land or houses. Thanks to Pollisum, I can use this prize money to build a house for my family,” he said.
Selvam said he joined the company in 2014 and has been trying to support his family of three children along with 7 children from his two brothers who have passed.
“When I found out that I won, I couldn’t believe it. I was very happy and I called my entire family to tell them about this good news! All of them were celebrating and crying at the same time,” he said.
“This will be a moment that we will never forget or our entire life!” he added.
