Theatresauce’s one and only all-female production “Saturn Return” hits the stage in June and is being directed by this year’s only female director, Mia Sabrina Mahadir.
Previously a director of “Orang Muda, Darah Muda”, Mia is a graduate of Theatresauce’s Emerging Directors Lab 2021/2022.
In the three pieces she directed for the lab, Mia has explored the themes of struggles among Muslim Malay millennials, female friendships, rivalry, and childhood trauma.
However, in ‘Saturn Return’, the six-piece all-female ensemble will be exploring the themes of womanhood, spirituality, female friendships, love, sex, and death.
Astrology enthusiasts may be familiar with the Saturn Return phenomena, a celestial occurrence that happens approximately every 29.5 years.
During this event, the planet Saturn symbolically “returns” to the precise zodiac sign, degree, and house it occupied at the time of an individual’s birth.
Saturn, known as the planet of karma, ushers in a transformative phase during one’s Saturn Return. It is a time to deeply contemplate one’s identity, legacy, and the lasting impact they wish to make on the world.
This period brings new challenges, responsibilities, tests, existential crises, and personal growth.
Regardless of personal beliefs or attitudes towards astrology, Saturn Return resonates with everyone, coinciding intriguingly with the weight of entering the thirties.
Located in Sunway’s Rooftop Theatre, Saturn Return is also run by an all-woman cast and designers and is set to show on June 14-18.
Meanwhile, the show is also currently crowdfunding and aims to achieve a total of RM25,000.
As per the norm in the Malaysian performing arts scene, artists rely on ticket sales and grants as a means of compensation for their work.
Through this crowdfunding initiative, individuals who desire to contribute more have the opportunity to do so, while also receiving enticing perks.
The funds raised will also aid in providing financial support for various aspects of the show, such as organizing a photoshoot, sourcing costumes, and constructing the set.
