Singapore’s daily Covid-19 infection numbers reached their highest point in recent months yesterday.
The spike of 11,504 cases reported yesterday is more than double the 5,309 cases reported on Monday. Among yesterday’s cases, 10,732 infections were local and one death was recorded.
This is the highest daily number since March 22 when infections rose to over 13,000 that day.
The city-state has been recording a steady increase in cases for the past two weeks, reporting an average of more than 6,000 cases daily.
According to the health ministry, there are 392 patients hospitalized, with nine aged 60 and older in the intensive care unit and 36 requiring oxygen support.
The ministry has put out a statement saying that most of the recent cases were caused by the Omicron BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants, which are less lethal than previous strains. However, the country on Monday reported the death of a 1-and-a-half-year-old caused by Covid-19, the first such death of any patient under 12 years old.
The loosening of restrictions on outdoor masking, gathering in larger groups and large-scale events could also explain the jump in cases. Despite this, Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong on Monday said the government would not put stricter restrictions back in place.
Singapore has recorded a total of 1,425,171 cases and 1,410 deaths since the start of the pandemic.
