A family celebrating Deepavali last night was playing with sparklers when they were suddenly egged by an unknown assailant.
The incident, which took place at an undisclosed location, quickly drew criticism calling out the unknown attacker for being “rude” and “screwed up” after it was disclosed by Twitter user Sham_ugh yesterday in a tweet reshared more than a thousand times.
“[M]y siblings, my niece and [I] were just playing with sparklers for Deepavali and someone from on top threw an egg at us????? wtf is this,” the user wrote along with photos showing a happy family, including a small child, dressed in traditional Indian costume and holding out sparklers. In other photos, a smashed egg stains the nearby floor.
Reached for comment, the user told Coconuts today that the family could not find the person responsible since they were at the foot of a housing block in Hougang.
“[W]e [couldn’t] find out [cause] we were downstairs! [W]e tried to see if anyone was peeking,” Sham_ugh added. “And no we [didn’t] report because no one was physically hurt.”
Sham_ugh did not mention whether he thought the incident was race related, although he did tell a commenter, “It is what it is I guess?”
Reports of racist incidents targeting Singapore’s Indian community have been on the rise in the past year, including one in which an Indian woman was kicked to the ground. The community celebrated Deepavali yesterday, also known as the festival of lights.
Others who reacted to the egg incident included @Eweinatsha, who called it “Beyond rude.”
“That is just screwed up,” said another. “I hope that they catch whoever did this.”
