Bureau of Customs officials yesterday seized 119 live tarantulas at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Pasay City.

The tarantulas were kept inside a pair of Asics sneakers, which were found inside the warehouse of a courier service. The parcel was sent by a certain Michal Krolicki from Poland while the consignee is a resident of General Trias, Cavite.

Customs officials noticed that there was something amiss when the package was X-rayed, prompting them to open the box. It was then that they discovered the arachnids which were hidden inside plastic vials.

The spiders were then turned over to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources Wildlife Traffic Monitoring Unit for safekeeping.
