The Light Rail Manila Corporation, the company which operates the LRT-1, announced today that it will be laying off at least 100 of its employees next month.
The management said in an online statement that the layoff was “due to a significant 90% drop in ridership brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic.” It said that the reduction in the workforce would take effect on Sept. 15.

The corporation said that prior to the layoff, it had already scaled down train operations significantly and deferred some of the company’s projects to offset losses. It said that each of the affected employees will receive their benefits as dictated by the law. It also promised that it would provide livelihood and mental health consultations to the laid-off workers.
Among those to be laid off are tellers and supervisors, reports radio station DZBB.
The modified enhanced community quarantine is currently in place in Metro Manila, which suspends the operations of the majority of public transport, including the city’s trains. The stricter quarantine is expected to end on Aug. 18.
