A 23-year-old man was rushed to hospital on Monday night after he was attacked by two knife-wielding men in Whampoa — and after being administered first aid by a newly elected district councillor (and doctor) who happened to be nearby.
Apple Daily reports that the victim, surnamed Ma, was walking along Hung Hom Road when two masked men appeared, ran after him, and attacked him near a set of traffic lights close to Tak Hong Street at 10:30pm. The men then reportedly fled in a private car.
Before the ambulance arrived, district councillor Kwong Po-yin — whom you may remember from a viral video featuring her scolding riot police in Whampoa — rushed to the scene.
Kwong, who also works at a public hospital as an accident and emergency doctor, posted on Facebook that she had just finished two local resident meetings that night and was halfway through eating dinner when she heard that someone had been attacked nearby. She then rushed to tend to Ma, helped bandage his wounds, and helped him onto an ambulance when it arrived.
He was taken to Queen Elizabeth Hospital in a conscious state, RTHK reports.
The case is being followed up on by the Kowloon City police district’s criminal investigation team. No arrests have been made, and it’s not clear what the motive for the attack was.
