Pitch your ideas at the “town hall” session of this upcoming annual arts festival
Date: Jan. 16, Thursday
Venue: Pineapple Lab, Poblacion, Makati City
Now on it’s 8th year, the grassroots annual arts festival Fringe MNL aims to round up and showcase fresh and daring material from emerging and established artists with a unique point of view both locally and abroad. Things kick off today with two options: a 2PM online conference call bringing together artists across genres, including poetry, music, dance, and visual arts; or participate in the same open access “town hall” discussion IRL at 6pm in Poblacion, Makati.
All are welcome to pitch in their ideas, offer volunteer work, and participate in the pre-planning of this open access, non-curated, and uncensored festival, which will open in February. For details, visit Fringe MNL’s Facebook page.
Listen to Friday night live music sets at this intimate Makati venue

Venue: Limbo, 5374 General Luna, Poblacion, Makati City
Ed Croix, Herbie Walton, and famed Terno Recordings head honcho Toti Dalmacion are all playing sets this Friday night at Poblacion’s creative gallery and music space Limbo. Wind down from your work week by ordering pints on tap, and chill while listening to a mashup of ambient jazz and electronic music in this intimate and cozy Makati space.

Watch Japanese animated films at this indie movie house

Venue: Cinema ’76 Film Society Anonas,, 3F Anonas LRT City Center, Quezon City
Screening at indie movie house Cinema ’76 Film Society’s Anonas branch this weekend, are Japanese animés Rascal Does Not Dream Of A Dreaming Girl by Soichi Masui, Weathering With You and Your Name by Makoto Shinkai, and Hello World by Tomohiko Ito. This pioneering Manila microcinema will be running the titles from this weekend until Tuesday.

Catch this exhibit with geopolitical sentiments at one of Manila’s oldest galleries
Date: Jan. 18, Saturday, to Feb. 29, Saturday
Venue: Galleria Duemila, 210 Loring St., 1300 Pasay City
Interdisciplinary artist Josephine Turalba mounts her second solo exhibition at Pasay City’s Galleria Duemila, which opens this Saturday. “High Wire High Seas” showcases her musings about the shifts in international power brought on by political and economic events. Sound like a mouthful? Maybe it’ll make more sense when you see Turalba’s theses interpreted through her artworks (one of which is seen above), where she employs mixed media including installation, photography, tapestry, painting, and experimental video.
In the exhibit, Turalba, who shuttles between her home in Manila and Boston, explores her self-confessed obsession with sociopolitical narratives, myths, and personal histories.

Catch free live painting sessions in this Art Fair
Date: Jan. 19, Sunday
Venue: SM Megamall Event Center, Doña Julia Vargas Ave., Pasig City
This second edition of Art Bar’s Art Fair is bringing in internationally-renowned Indian watercolorist Prafull Sawant, who will be doing live demos of his photorealistic paintings. Other activities in store for the art specialty store’s annual fair include live murals, art workshops, and — wouldn’t you know it — some retail therapy, as Art Bar puts on special offers on a range of craft and creative tools. The one-day only affair runs 10am to 10pm.
