The serene and decidedly upscale surroundings of One Degree 15 Marina in Sentosa Cove turned into a scene of turmoil after a yacht caught fire yesterday afternoon.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) was alerted at 4:30pm to the blaze, which involved a yacht that was berthed at a fuel dock at the marina. The initial firefighting was conducted by members of the in-house emergency response team, who used three hose reels to douse the flame. SCDF personnel later arrived to extinguish the fire using two waterjets.

In total, 15 people had to be conveyed to hospital for treatment. An infant and two other casualties were sent to Singapore General Hospital for burn injuries, while 12 others — including some members of the in-house emergency response team — were taken to National University Hospital and SGH for smoke inhalation.
