A hole suddenly opened up on Queen’s Road Central today, causing alarm to pedestrians and commuters alike.

The sinkhole, measuring roughly 2.5 feet by 2.5 feet, was reported to police by a passerby at around 11am today, Apple Daily reports.

Police cordoned off the scene with traffic cones and stationed officers around the hole until it could be repaired.

By 6pm, the hole had still not been repaired. A construction worker deployed to the site told Coconuts Hong Kong that he was still waiting for supplies, but the government had ordered him to patch up the hole by the end of the day as the road is too busy to be closed.

So far, traffic has not been affected, as the sinkhole is not situated in a carriageway.

Speaking to Coconuts Hong Kong, the construction worker said, “The hole is very dangerous. It’s so big and deep, two people could fall into it at the same time!”

When asked about the cause of the sinkhole, the worker said an old outfall (a discharge point for the waste water) built “at least 50 years ago” was to blame. According to the worker, the concrete iron rods underneath the site are old and eroded.
